Holy Spirit: Our Helper, Our Empowerment
What do we really know about the Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit was present before the foundations of the earth. In the creation story, the Spirit of God hovered over the waters. From the very beginning, the Holy Spirit has been active, moving, and involved in God’s plan.
One of the most quoted passages about the Holy Spirit is found in Acts 2, referencing the prophecy from Joel:
“And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God,
That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh;
Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
Your young men shall see visions,
Your old men shall dream dreams…
And they shall prophesy.” (Acts 2:17–18, NKJV)
This promise wasn’t just for a select few—it was for all flesh. Sons and daughters. Young and old. Servants and leaders. God’s Spirit would be poured out on everyone who believes.
But who is the Holy Spirit?
Jesus calls Him our Helper. In John 14:26, Jesus tells His disciples that the Holy Spirit would teach them all things and remind them of everything He had spoken. He is also called the Spirit of truth (John 14:17). The world may not recognize Him, but those who belong to Christ know Him—because He dwells with us and lives in us.
When Jesus ascended to Heaven, He didn’t leave us alone. God sent the Holy Spirit to live inside every believer. That means we are never without guidance, wisdom, or comfort. The Spirit leads us into truth and empowers us to live the life God has called us to live.
So how are we filled with the Holy Spirit?
Jesus said in Matthew 7:7–8, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find.” We must first have a relationship with Christ, but then we simply ask. The infilling of the Holy Spirit isn’t for personal gain—it’s for the profit of all (1 Corinthians 12:7). We are empowered so we can serve, love, and boldly share Jesus with others.
Being filled isn’t a one-time event. Just like we need daily food to sustain our bodies, we need continual filling to sustain our spirits. When we pour out in service, we must return to God to be filled again.
The Holy Spirit empowers us—just like at Pentecost—to live boldly in a world that desperately needs Jesus. Let’s seek Him, ask Him, and allow Him to fill us fresh every day.
